Welcome to the middle school section of the Patrick Henry Website. The middle school houses 320 students in grades 5-8. There are around 36 staff members that play a part in the students’ education. We have been in this building for eight years now. The school runs on a nine period schedule with students changing classes every 40 minutes. Several teachers travel between the middle school and high school.
All students have the five core subjects (math, reading, science, English, and social studies) along with physical education and Study Island (test prep). The fifth and seventh grade students also have a technology class while the sixth and eighth graders are enrolled in health. After meeting the general music requirement, fifth graders can decide to try an instrument for the band or join chorus. The eighth graders have a health/physical education period that they receive high school credit for at the end of the year.
The middle school is also part of MOMS (Maximizing our Middle School) which is part of the High Schools That Work program. This past year we received a Depth of Implementation Award from the HSTW program.
The middle school has a student council that has representatives from each grade level. The student council is in charge of the concession stands for home sporting events; they take part in Red Ribbon Week, and plan after school events. Another group at the middle school is the NJHS (National Junior Honor Society). These students are selected based on their grades and active role in society. These students have community service projects during the course of the school year to complete.
Starting in seventh grade students may participate in school sponsored athletics. There are several sports to choose from for seventh and eighth graders. We all enjoy cheering for the red, white and blue!

Sixth grade students studied the structures and functions of a cell. They created a “cell” cake with a variety of food items to represent the different parts of a cell. Some of the items used included frosting on the cake for the cytoplasm, Oreos for the nucleus, whoppers for the nucleolus, Twizzlers for the endoplasmic reticulum and fruit slices to represent the mitochondria. Check out the pictures on Photo Galleries - 2013 (in the Navigation links at the left).

Due to the frailty of the yearbook, a Photo Stream was created allowing the yearbook to be viewed online. As the book reads, this is the first yearbook that was ever published by Deshler High School.
